Erdington Bake Off

Massive thank you to everyone who baked and bought at our cake sale on 11th June.  We raised a brilliant £275.00 towards our summer fundraising effort.  Well done everyone.

More Grades Success

Huge congratulations to Issy and Naomi who passed their NDP grade 3.

grades-3This grade is a big jump up from grade 4.  Both girls had to perform cartwheel tuck back somersault dismounts from beam, upstarts on bars and somersaults on floor.

Unfortunately the usual venue for this competition was not available this year so it took place at the University of Birmingham.  This is a tricky venue which was not designed for competitions.  Nevertheless, the girls tried their best, and were awarded a commendation each for their efforts.  Well done

Distinctions at Grades!

chardeHere at Erdington Gym Club we offer County level gymnastics for those children who are capable of this really demanding path of the sport.

These children train for 9 hours per week and are expecting to train really hard on their conditioning, presentation and to produce the very best routines of their ability.

During the Grade 6 and 4 assessments and competition this April, our gymnasts did fantastically. The girls performed a routine on all four pieces of apparatus as well as a challenging range and conditioning routine, for which they have been working really hard in the gym.

All of our gymnasts who partook in these grade received the award of DISTINCTION! We are so proud of the effort they have put in, and the maturity and hard work they showed on the day.

In the grade 6 out of age, the girls received lots of compliments from coaches and spectators regarding their presentation. The girls all had a clean competition, Bethany had a little slip of nerves on beam which caused her to fall, but she still placed 12th Overall, with an amazing 2nd place on Bars and 3rd on Floor. Izzy finished 6th overall, with 4th places being achieved on floor and bars. Evie worked so hard as to receive the Bronze medal, receiving the 2nd highest scores on Bars and Floor and the third highest on range and conditioning.

Grade 4 is quite a step up in difficulty, our girls performed better than we could ever have imagined. Susannah has not been training at this level for very long at all and managed to combat many of the nerves she had shown in training. She had a fall in her free roll on beam, but maintained her cool and completed her routine looking like she had been competing forever. We are really proud of the progress she has made. Susie placed 27th, and got that all important distinction that we were aiming for.

Charde performed like we have never seen her before. She felt quite poorly before the competition, but sucked it up and was confident and elegant on all pieces. She received the silver medal overall and placed 2nd on beam and floor and 3rd on Range and Conditioning. I was so glad she gave it her all and showed everyone the gymnast that she can be.

A massive thank you goes to coach Emma who has worked really hard with these girls towards their grades. Now we can start working much more exciting gymnastics over the next few months.

George Finney Competition 2016

On Sunday 13th March over 60 gymnasts competed in the regional Floor and Vault competition in Stoke on Trent, which saw 900 gymnasts across the West Midlands compete.

The gymnasts performed a set exercise on Floor and had two attempts at Vault.

Throughout the day we had various compliments about our Gymnast’s presentation and performance.  We sported our new competition leotards and looked fantastic.  We saw some of the most controlled floor routines we have ever performed, and we are finally gaining more confidence on vault.

The coaches really enjoyed spending time chatting with the children and the children and young people all showed massive support for each other.

Some of the medals received on the day were:

Under 2 Hours training:

Under 13s Purple TEAM GOLD
Ellie Summerfield IND SILVER

Under 4 Hours:

Grace Evans IND GOLD

Under 11s Yellow TEAM GOLD
Gracie Bowen IND SILVER

Over 4 Hours:

Erdington GC Disco and Social night

disco 3Gymnasts and families alike enjoyed a fantastic evening of socialising on Saturday 6th February.  Our wonderful volunteer social team arranged the event that took place at the Hollyfields Centre in Erdington.

Over 160 people attended the event from various sections of the EGC.  It was a great opportunity for the children and parents to have fun together and meet people they were unfamiliar with connected with our club.  The night began with party games arranged by the DJ, followed by a yummy buffet and candyfloss for all the children.  A successful raffle took place, with Eleanor Donnelly winning the first prize of a leotard of her choice from The Zone catalogue.   The children got to show their skills on the dance floor during an organised ‘dance battle’ after which, children, parents and coaches alike danced the night away together.

Many thanks to all those who made this night a success.  A great deal of effort went in to ensure everyone had a great night.  All the photos taken can be viewed on our Facebook page.

If you are interested in getting involved with any aspect of helping out with the club, please speak to one of the coaches who will point you in the right direction.

Fantastic Gymnastics at our Christmas Competition

We had such a great time at our Christmas Competition that took place on Saturday 12th December.  This competition was a fun end to the term for those gymnasts who train for up to two hours per week.

There were lots of beautiful pointed toes, excellent vaults and smiling faces.  This was the first introduction to competing for a lot of the children and a few were very nervous when they arrived.  However, when our friendly coaches and even friendlier judges (complete with Christmas jumpers) got them into the spirit of things, a good time was had by all.

Each child performed a short floor routine and had two attempts at vault.  Medals were awarded for the smartest routines on both floor and vault and trophies for those who scored highest overall in each group.  Although not everyone could be a winner, every child went home with a certificate and some Christmas Chocolates to enjoy.

Many thanks to all who supported this event.  Through entry fees and the sale of refreshments we raised a fantastic £486.46 for our club funds so well done everyone.

There are quite a few photographs of this event on our Facebook page so be sure to check it out!

AGM Recap

On Monday, 23 November 2015, the Erdington Gym Club held its Annual General Meeting with a fantastic turn-out by parents and coaches who all want to work together to move the club forward.

Special thanks were given to Kerry who has tirelessly volunteered her time to help Louise organise the membership and collect payments; to Dean who regularly leads us in assembling and disassembling the equipment; to the coaches who give more than the time they are paid for to attend meetings and set-up; and to Louise who goes above-and-beyond on a daily basis to ensure the smooth running of our gymnastics club.

Information was provided about the financial situation of the club, the status of the various coaching groups, and future plans for the club.

There were a couple of issues raised that all members need to be aware of:

– Safeguarding: it is not acceptable (by either EGC or Greenwood Academy) for children to be dropped off and enter the building without parental supervision when gym club is not in session. It is not safe, so please ensure an adult is with your children until gym starts.
Membership fees; it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure their membership dues are paid on time. If there is going to be a problem making the payment please get ahold of Louise as soon as possible.
– Fundraising: this year we are going to be focussing on fundraising as there are cash flow issues and new equipment that needs to be purchased. Our first event is 6 February 2016 and the social team will be organising more.
– Volunteers: the membership fees are kept low but in exchange we need assistance from all of the gymnasts’ parents. Someone will be getting in touch soon to see if there are areas you might be interested in helping with, or feel free to get in touch if there is something in particular you’d like to get involved with.

The AGM was very efficient, finished by 8pm, with a high level of enthusiasm and commitment by the attendees (and several others via email).

There will be a committee meeting in January, stay tuned for more details. Full minutes will be sent to all members shortly.
